Two laptop K[not V]M setup

I was looking for a freeware utility to use my second laptop's display as the extended display for my office laptop[like you would connect a LCD]. It seems the only way you can do that by using(read buying) MaxiVista and there is no open source/freeware substitute to it.

Alternatively, I also wanted to control my office and personal laptop with a single keyboard/touchpad, while they display there own contents. I found Synergy which
"lets you easily share a single mouse and keyboard between multiple computers with different operating systems without special hardware. It's intended for users with multiple computers on their desk since each system uses its own display."
This seems to be a pretty easy to setup utility and works like a KM switch and not a KVM(Keyboard Video Mouse) yet.

Jonathan Hardwick's blog has a nice comparison for these tools.
